IGCS Alumni Experience- Fatima Bravo Lara

IGCS serves as a platform for research and academic exchange for Masters students, Doctoral candidates, and Scientists. Since its inception in 2010, we have been facilitating exchange of more than 1000 scholars from German and Indian academic institutions who are dedicated in contributing towards climate science.

The Experience Report Series celebrates our alumni and their success under IGCS. Today we share the experience report of Fatima Bravo Lara who had their exchange period between 25. December 2023 until 05. March 2024 at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Chennai, India under Prof. Dr. Krishna Vasudevan. Their home institution is the Department of energy process engineering and conversion technologies of regenerative energies at Technische Universität Berlin, Germany under Prof. Dr. Frank Behrendt.

Fatima was also a participant of the IGCS Summer School 2023, which for them highlighted the collaboration between #India and #Germany on renewable energy integration. This experience led to valuable connections, especially with Prof. Dr. Vasudevan, which facilitated the student’s later research exchange.

As a Master’s student in #UrbanManagement from #Mexico, studying in Germany, the opportunity to research in India provided a unique perspective on urban challenges in a rapidly growing country. The exchange allowed them to compare urban management practices and energy policies in Mexico, Germany, and India. They were struck by the rich intercultural environment at #IITmadras, where interactions with students from diverse backgrounds deepened their understanding of urban management.

The exchange exceeded expectations for them, offering not only technical insights into renewable energy but also a human connection to the culture and people of India. Key relationships, such as with a local colleague made the experience more meaningful. These experiences shaped their Master’s thesis on Smart and Active Mobility and reinforced their ability to operate across diverse cultural and economic contexts.

You can read their full experience report below where they emphasize the importance of embracing cultural experiences, which enriched both their academic and personal growth.

IGCS at RWTH Go Abroad Fair

The IGCS was a part of the RWTH Aachen University Go Abroad Fair on 14th October 2024. The Go Abroad Fair offers students an overview of various work and study abroad opportunities as well as funding programmes.

RWTH Aachen has had a partnership with IIT Madras since 1959. And, in 2010, the IGCS was opened at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in #Chennai, at the initiative of the German and Indian governments. IGCS is a part of the DAAD initiative “A New Passage to India” and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany (BMBF).

The centre simultaneously serves as a platform for research and academic exchange for Masters students, Doctoral candidates, and Scientists. Since 2012, IGCS has been organising its flagship Winter & Summer Schools, facilitating exchange of 30 of the brightest scholars from German and Indian academic institutions who are dedicated to climate science.

Since then, IGCS has facilitated exchange of more than 900 students and researchers from both countries.

The IGCS team likes to thank its members- Lisa Van Aalst, Rahul Govind Rajkarnikar and Marvin Grieß for both organising this Go Abroad Fair and representing IGCS on this day.

IGCS Contributes to Conferences in Berlin and Dresden

IGCS Research Associate Dr. Christoph Woiwode shares the updates from IGCS Focus Area- Land Use in September. He states:

“Three incredibly fabulous weeks of scholarly exchange and engagement ended with the departure of Dr. Keya Chakraborty and Lalit Kishor Bhati on 28.09.2024. During this time, IGCS’ had the opportunity to contribute to the #DAADGlobalEnvironmentCentres Conference in Berlin and the #IOERConference in Dresden with a workshop, meet and network with fantastic people, and made the most of it by exploring common research interests.

Adding to the activities were talks given by Keya and Lalit at the IOER, UNU- FLORES, and the Sri Aurobindo Centre Berlin. This stay provides a fruitful foundation to continue our collaboration on various levels in the near future!

Many thanks to the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS) for the funding of the research fellowships, and to Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) as host institution.”
