Pilot Study on “Climate Change and Socio-Cultural Transformation for Sustainable Living in Urban India”

Dr. Christoph Woiwode, IGCS Professor Land Use/Sustainable Urbanisation, IIT Madras, received a grant as partner in pilot project “Climate Change and Socio-Cultural Transformation for Sustainable Living in Urban India” with Sathish Selvakumar from the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), Bangalore.

Purpose of the internal grant from IIHS is to provide seed funding to explore novel research themes. Focusing on Bangalore and Chennai, the study is carried out from December 2014 to March 2015 to collect empirical data on socially innovative sustainability initiatives. This study will help to understand what it would take for rapid changes in lifestyle choices to happen in cities like Bangalore / Chennai. Moreover, it will enhance the understanding of creating cities and transforming cities that have low carbon lifestyles. Empirical instances studied in this initial project will be used to feed into a larger, action and transformation research project to be carried out with partners in Germany that would develop and test ‘transformative urban community development’ methods.
